The challenge
Ordering a certified translation in the UK usually means emailing documents back and forth, phoning for a quote, and waiting blind until the translation arrives. Language Lab wanted the opposite: instant quotes, secure upload, and a customer who can watch their document move from upload to certified delivery in real time — across 100+ languages, without a single phone call.
Our solution
We built the platform from scratch in three weeks: one Next.js application serving three portals — clients order and track, translators work their queue, admins certify and dispatch. Scanned documents are OCR'd automatically for instant per-word quotes, payments run through Stripe, and every order moves through a live five-stage pipeline — uploaded, translating, quality check, certified, delivered — with direct messaging built in. Translators get an optional AI first draft powered by Claude and DeepL behind a provider abstraction; a human always reviews and certifies. Everything runs serverless on AWS in London: documents never leave the UK, GDPR erasure is built in, and the entire stack is defined in code.
Results
Language Lab is live and taking orders: a translation business that operates like a product company. Quotes arrive in seconds instead of email round-trips, customers self-serve around the clock and watch their order progress live, and every certification carries a full audit trail — on infrastructure that scales to zero when quiet.
